Alojz Peterle, chairman of Friends of Turkey in the European Parliament, expressed his deepest sympathy for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey.  "On behalf of the Friends of Turkey in the European Parliament, I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and our support for Turkey in these hard times", he said.

Mr. Alojz Peterle, The Chairman of the Panel, opened the event and welcomed all the guests. He then gave the floor to Mr. Taner Yildiz, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, to deliver the keynote speech.

Mr. Taner Yildiz emphasised on the importance of the EU accession process and EU-Turkey relations in general. He highlighted Turkey's noteworthy economic performance in the wake of the recent financial crisis despite troubles other countries have suffered during this period. He underlined that Turkey's prospective accession would be a significant asset for the EU and that the advantages of a possible membership outweigh the disadvantages. He noted the importance of having a young population and implied that Turkey's accession would bring a much-needed asset in this manner.

Press Release on the Commission's Turkey Progress Report 2011

Brussels, 12th October 2011

Alojz Peterle, Chairman of the Friends of Turkey in the European Parliament commented on the European Commission's 2011 Progress Report on Turkey.

"We see that the Report welcomes the economic performance of Turkey in the crisis, reforms in the judiciary system developments in the military-civilian relation and the improvements in the democracy."
